The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is managed by Sun Life for the Government of Canada. Once your application is approved and you are deemed eligible, your information will be shared with Sun Life, which will then enroll you in the CDCP. Upon enrollment, you will receive a welcome package from Sun Life. This package will include:
The welcome package you receive from Sun Life will specify the date from which you can start seeing an oral health provider. You can only schedule appointments on or after your coverage start date. Your start date depends on two factors:
When your application is received
When your enrollment is completed
The first group of CDCP clients will be eligible to visit an oral health provider starting in May 2024.
To find a participating oral health provider, you can use the CDCP Provider Search tool on Sun Life’s website. This tool is regularly updated as new providers join the CDCP. If you encounter any difficulty finding a provider, contact Sun Life at 1-888-888-8110 for assistance.
Visiting an Oral Health Provider
Starting July 8, 2024, oral health providers can direct bill Sun Life for services provided to CDCP clients on a claim-by-claim basis, even if they haven’t formally signed up for the CDCP. This means that as a CDCP client, you can visit any oral health provider of your choice, provided the provider agrees to direct bill Sun Life for services covered under the plan.
Before July 8, 2024, claims will only be processed from participating providers.
When booking an appointment, discussing care options, and before accepting care from an oral health provider, make sure to:
Confirm that the provider will accept CDCP clients.
Know your coverage start date and any applicable co-payment.
Ask your provider if there are any costs you will be responsible for above the co-payment before receiving care.
Never pay for the full amount of the services in advance expecting to receive reimbursement from Sun Life, as this is not possible.
After receiving care, you are responsible for paying any costs not covered by the CDCP directly to the provider.
Annual Reassessment
Eligibility for the CDCP must be reassessed annually to ensure continued qualification for the plan. The reassessment process is vital for maintaining your CDCP coverage. More details on the annual reassessment process will be provided at a later date.
